A monster start to her career has netted Carl Sandburg College volleyball freshman Peyton Bowman (Sciota, Ill./West Prairie) a national honor from the NJCAA.

The Chargers’ 6-foot-3 middle hitter was named the Division II Offensive Player of the Week (start of season through Sept. 1) on Thursday after a remarkably efficient opening to her 2018 campaign. Bowman put down 101 kills in 12 matches and posted a .533 hitting percentage through Sept. 1 to earn the award.

Bowman had a hitting percentage of .500 or better nine times in the Chargers’ first 12 matches, led by an .833 mark (10 kills and no errors on 12 attacks) in an Aug. 31 sweep of Iowa Lakes. She recorded double-digit kills on five occasions during the award week, highlighted by a season-best 15 in a victory over St. Clair County (Mich.) on Aug. 25. Bowman also posted a season-high four solo blocks in that match.

After adding nine kills on 11 attacks in Wednesday’s sweep of Highland, Bowman’s season hitting percentage of .545 ranks third in all of NJCAA Division II. She also ranks 22nd nationally in total kills (110) and 18th in solo blocks (18).

Bowman and the Chargers (9-4) return to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday at home against Illinois Valley as they look to improve to 3-0 in the Arrowhead Conference.
